THE CONTRAST BETWEEN PENDET DANCE IN BALI AND SIGEH PENGUNTEN DANCE IN LAMPUNG

ABSTACT



Traditional dance has been a part of culture in some countries. Like in Indonesia, it also has many different traditional dance. Definition of traditional dance itself is can be another term for folk dance, or sometimes even for ceremonial dance. The term ‘Traditional’ is more frequently used when the emphasis is on the cultural roots of the dance. Traditional dancing is generally more of a social activity rather than competitive, but it is normally choreographed. Depending on the dance type itself, Traditional dancing can be either partnered or solo, and are mainly danced in formation. 

There are many traditional dance that has by Indonesian culture. In this article, the writer only focus on traditional dance in Bali and Lampung. In Bali we called as Pendet dance, and in Lampung we called as Sigeh Pengunten dance. In the fact, both of traditional dance is for welcoming guest. But, this paper only discuss three differences between traditional dance in Bali and Lampung.

INTRODUCTION



“Beragam budaya begitu mengagumkan keelokan alamnya oh sungguh mempesona, indahnya Negeri ku... Kucinta, Aku terpana, Pesona Indonesia”.


Maybe, you are familiar with this sentence. Actually, it was not only the sentence, this is a song by Pesona Indonesia. This song used in some advertisement, to tell about some beautiful destination in Indonesia. This is the way to introduced some tourism destination and some culture there in Indonesia. 

Actually, Indonesia is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Indonesia is the largest island country in the world by the number of islands, with more than fourteen thousand islands. Indonesia has an estimated population of over 255 million people and is the world's fourth most populous country and the most populous Muslim-majority country. The world's most populous island of Java contains 51% of the country's population.

From that statement, we know beside Indonesia has an estimated population over 255 million people, also Indonesia has many kind culture that has by different people in Indonesia. Talking about culture, Indonesia has about 300 ethnic groups, each with cultural identities developed over centuries.For the definition of culture itself, is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.There are many kind of culture, like music, dance, drama and theatre, martial art, traditional clothes and etc. 

From many kind of culture, the writer wants to explain more about one of culture in Indonesia that has many information that we can get. The writer interest to know more about the traditional dance in 2 different culture, (in Lampung and Bali). In Lampung we called as Sigeh Pengunten dance and in Bali as Pendet dance. We can get some information from both of culture, related about traditional dance from different island. 

The writer find 3 differences from both of traditional dance, it from the movement,the instrument music and the costumeof dance itself.






DISCUSSION



Ø  Sigeh Pengunten Dance

Sigeh Penguten dance which is better known as Tari Sembah is a traditional dance of Lampung. The dance has beautiful and soft dancing movements adopting and reflecting the Lampung society’s real life movements. In Lampung society’s tradition, the dance functions to welcome honorable guests who visit Lampung. The welcoming activity is symbolized by giving ’Sekapur Sirih’by a dancer to the guests in the middle of the dance, reflecting warm, hospitable and friendly welcome.

Ø Pendet Dance

Pendet is a traditional dance from Bali, Indonesia, in which offerings are made to purify the temple or theater as a prelude to ceremonies or other dances. Pendet is typically performed by young girls, carrying bowls of flower petals, handfuls of which are cast into the air at various times in the dance. Pendet can be thought of as a dance of greeting, to welcome the audience and invite spirits to enjoy a performance.

From this, we know both of traditional dance for the functions is to welcome the guest or audience and to invite them to enjoy the show from both of culture. But, in this paper, the writer want to explain the contrast from both of traditional dance itself.


11. The Movement

a.       Pendet Dance

This dance had a movement pattern that is more dynamic than Rejang Dance that was delivered in groups or pairs. Usually displayed after Rejang dance in the temple court yard and generally facing toward the sacred (shrines) by wearing ceremonial dress and each dancer brings sangku, jugs, bowls, and other offerings fixtures.

-         - Kinds Leg Movement
Various leg movements called "Gegajalan" on Pendet consists of various forms such as the following:

1. Looks Sirangpada = soles of the feet together oblique
2. flare = Walk
3. Ngandang Arep = Walk to advance
4. Milpil = Walk fast
5. Nyregseg = Shifts fast

-         - Kinds Hand Movement
Function hand gestures called "pepiletan" in Pendet there are all kinds are as follows:

1. Luke Nagasatru = hands rotate into
2. Luke Nerudut = hands together

-         - Kinds Finger Gestures
The function of the finger movement called "tetanganan" which consists of a wide variety of the following:

1. Nyakupbawa = finger be rounded
2. Ulap-ulap = Waving


-        - The Body Movement
Function body movements called "leluwesan" consists of various movements such as the following:

1. Ngejatpala = Base vibrating arm


-        - The Movement's expression
Functions mimic the movement called "entiah-tjerengu" consists of air-kinds of shapes such as a below:

1. Luru = chirpy
2. Kenjungmanis = smile

-        - The Movement Neck
Function neck movement called "dedengkek" consists of various forms as mentioned below:

1. Uluwangsul = necksway(smooth)
2. Ngotag = necksway(hard)


-        - Eye Movement
1. Nyeledet (right / left)
2. Ngelier


b.      Sigeh Pengunten Dance

1.      Lapah Tebeng
The motion move. This motion is used when entering and exiting the area show. Accompaniment that used to accompany dancers enter and exit the stage area has a fast tempo or called gupek.

2.      Seluang Mudik
Motion of transition from a standing position towards a low-level position that attitude Simpuhjong. At the time of this motion dancers perform accompaniment sounds softly.

3.      Obeisance (Sembah)
The motion can be said to be the main motion at this dance.

4.      Kilat Mundur
A wrist motion as its axis.

5.      Ngerujung
A wrist motion is done with fast and slow.

6.      Mempam Bias
Is one of the motion on the move, performed by dancers who are in the area shows when the dancers slap carrier left the area show then form a 2-2 formation (line of sight).

7.      GubuhGakhang
Is one of the motion on the move, its direction forward and backward, then towards that have returned to the front.

8.      Ngiyau Bias
A movement that takes in the place.

9.      Tolak Tebeng
Is one of the motion on the move, the direction of movement toward the right and left sides.

10.  Belah hui
Wrist motion carried inside by straightening both hands in front of chest.

11.  Lipetto
The closing movement on the dance SigehPenguten.

12.  Samber Melayang
Is a link motion between the motion and one another and there is no particular meaning.

22. The Instrument Music 

a.       Pendet Dance

Pendet dance accompanied by a set of Balinese gamelan instruments. Balinese gamelan different from the Javanese gamelan. Balinese gamelan instruments, among others: tarompong, reyong, bende, kempul, gongs, drums Wadu, petuk, drums lanang, cengceng, jublag, Jagong, bronze, inconsiderate, magnolia, and gong Kebyar. Gamelan usually done while sitting cross-leggedman, and a musical instrument played by striking with a special hitter.

b.      Sigeh Pengunten Dance

1. Name of instrument: TaloBalak (Kolintang)
2. Name of tabuhan: gupek and tarei. Gupek is the accompaniment which has a fast tempo. Tarei is the accompaniment that has a slow tempo is used in the core subjects and dance.

3 3.   The Customs

a.       Pendet Dance

1.      Head

-          - Hair tied with pigtails. If short hair can be assisted with antol.
-          - Hair that has been in pigtails decorated with japanese flowers, frangipani flowers, roses, cempaka (a mix between original and imitation flowers).
-     - In the face makeup with beautiful as possible. Lines of the face so clearly visible from a long distance.
-         - Using Subeng.

2.      Body

-          - Clothes in Pendet
1.      Tapih
2.      Sabuk Stagen

-          - Clothes out Pendet
1.      Kamen Prade
2.      Sabuk Prade
3.      Kancrik Prade
4.      Bracelets (Silver or Immitation)

-         3. Property
Property that was taken that bowl containing canang or flowers coupled with leaf decoration.

b.      Sigeh Pengunten Dance

1.      Head

-         -  Crown (Siger) by the entire dancer

Meaning of siger is the crowning symbol of cultural customs and levels of honorable life, Siger color is yellow gold and worn on the head. There are nine taper serrations notched, as a symbol of the nine rivers that flow in Lampung, namely Way Semaka, Way Sekampung, Way Seputih, Way Pangubuan , Way AbungSarem, Way Sungkai, Way Kanan, Way Tulang Bawang And Way Mesuji.

-          - Baharu Kembang Goyang

The color is golden yellow, is used on the head of the way to wear it like a puncture in the hair.

-         - Kembang Melur

An accessory that is worn on the head that has a function to beautify the hair bun.

-         - Earrings

Accessories used in the ear to beautify parts of the ear.

2.      Body

-         - Tapis Clothes

Tapis is a cloth that is often used lampung people to attend religious ceremonies or other ceremonial events. This cloth is a woven cloth in which one material is gold colored thread. The base color cloth as diverse as green, red, and black. But generally used in dance Sigeh Pengunten is colored red and black base or a more theatrical.

-         - Clothes Brackets

The clothes worn which is the material is white brocade wedding dress customs as in Lampung.

-         - Bebe Usus Ayam

Is part of the costume worn to cover the chest of dancer. Bebe color according to the clothes worn dancer.

-         - Buah jukum and Papan Jajar Necklace

Is used around the neck that has a function to beautify the neck.

-         - Bracelets kano, Bracelets burung, and Bracelets pipih

-         - Tanggai

Tanggai totaling 10 pieces of property that is worn on a finger. In Tanggai lampung on the whole surface covered so Tanggai dancer nails are not visible, and there is a chain - a small chain that connects the fifth Tanggai.

3.      Properties

-         - Tepak

Tepak is a box made of brass, is used as a place to put the betel leaf and equipment for nginang. As a social system, Sigeh Penguten dance as prevalent motion ducked as a form of worship and respect host guests.

-          - Betel Leaves

As a symbol of cultural, other cultures contained in Sigeh Pengunten dance is a belief system that is in Lampung society. Betel leaf is believed to be repellent reinforcements by local people. It is commonly associated with the presence of betel leaf on the dance Sigeh Pengunten presented at the beginning of the show.









CONCLUSION



Lampung and Bali are two islands that have by Indonesia Country. In both of island they have two different cultures. From culture itself we can know the identity from both of them. The culture in this case is about traditional dance that has by both of them. In Lampung we called as Sigeh Pengunten Dance and in Bali we called as Pendet Dance. Both of traditional dance have 3 differences. For the first, about their movement, the second is the instrument music, and the last is the customs. But, for the functions of the traditional dance are the same for welcoming guests.
